In 1979, a group of young filmmakers travels to rural Texas to make an adult film on an elderly couple’s secluded farm. When their reclusive hosts discover what their guests are doing, the production turns into a desperate fight for survival.
Shot in New Zealand, X blends the language of 1970s independent horror with a story about youth, aging, desire and the pursuit of fame. Mia Goth plays dual roles as aspiring performer Maxine Minx and the elderly Pearl, whose story would become the foundation for the subsequent films in the trilogy.
The ensemble cast includes Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, Martin Henderson, Owen Campbell and Stephen Ure.
X had its World Premiere at SXSW in March 2022. A24 released the film theatrically in the United States on March 18, 2022. Its success launched a trilogy that continued with PEARL later that year and concluded with MaXXXine in 2024.
